Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal. Enigmatic and Exotic. A major tourist destination for visitors from across the world. Lisbon is more than a destination. Lisbon is the gateway to the rest of Portugal and Europe. It is the most westerly country of mainland Europe.  But only a six-hour drive from North Africa.

Portugal was settled by Celtic tribes over 2,000 years ago before its incorporation into the Roman Empire. It was Roman for 700 years until Christianised by the invading Visigoths. They reigned for 200 years until an irresistible force swept up from North Africa and conquered the whole of Portugal. The new religion of Islam dominated all Portugal. A domination that was to last for 500 years. Half a millennium in which Muslim, Jew and Christian, lived side by side in peace. A peace that was to be broken when the resurgent forces of

Christianity pushed South to retake Portugal. The period known in history as the ‘Reconquista’.

Leading the ‘Reconqista’ was the Legendary Order of Fighting Monks, the ‘Order of the Knights Templar’. Founded in Jerusalem during the First Crusade, the Templars were the most formidable fighting force in the medieval world. After finally expelling the Islamic forces, the Moors, they owned one-third of all the land of Portugal. Many of the castles, fortresses and watchtowers they built can still be seen today. Their largest, most magnificent, castle was built in Tomar in Central Portugal. This castle was their headquarters during the Reconquista. It contains the beautiful 12th century church where the Templars worshipped. In the early 14th century the Order was abolished by the Pope. But in Portugal the successors to the Templars continued as the Order of Christ. In the 16th century the magnificent Window of the Discoveries was added by King Manuel, Master of the Order. It is now a  UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sylvia Anginotti

Sylvia Anginotti is a former college lecturer and mediaeval history graduate. She spent many summers travelling Mediaeval Pilgrim routes through Europe. She researched and wrote the guidebook “The Knights Templar of Tomar” in English and Portuguese. She is currently co-authoring a book about the Knights Templar Order and its successors the Order of Christ 

João Fiandeiro

João Fiandeiro is a specialist in historic trails and is Director of Caminhos da História, a Cultural Tourism company. He has a Masters Degree in Cultural Tourism and is a former journalist and Professor in Tomar Polytechnic. He is a researcher and author of Knights Templar history. He is a qualified regional tourist guide and a member of the Knights Templar Order OSMTH.  His expertise and knowledge are a key factor in enabling us to offer clients these amazing tours. He speaks English, French, Italian,  Spanish, Portuguese

Peter Moore

Peter Moore worked for many years across Europe as a private consultant on economic regeneration, particularly through tourism. He has an extensive, in-depth, knowledge of the Templars and the medieval world. He is responsible for marketing and tour organisation.  He speaks English, French, German, Portuguese

Sandra Costa

Sandra Costa was born in Tomar and has worked and lived there and in Lisbon. Proud of the history and heritage of Tomar she loves to help people to understand its history. She was a journalist and Head of Communication for a UNESCO World Heritage site. She was Head of Communication for Tomar Municipality. A Graduate in Communication she speaks English, French and Portuguese.
